Peforming Arts Series Schedule announced

Appalachian State UniversityÕs Office of Cultural Affairs announces its 2001-02 Performing Arts Series. The program consists of nine music, dance and theatre performances scheduled from October to April of the 2001-02 academic year.

Fiddler and violinist Mark OÕConner and The Metamorphosen Chamber Orchestra will perform Oct. 18. According to a press release, OÕConner is recognized as a gifted composer and is one of the Òbrightest talents of his generation.Ó

The Hong Kong Ballet will present ÒThe Last EmperorÓ Nov. 5. The story behind the ballet is about Pu Yi, who became emperor of China at age two in 1908 Ð over three years later China became a republic, ending 3000 years of rule.

The River City Brass Band will perform Nov. 16., playing Òbig bandÓ music of the 1930s and 1940s. The comedy troupe Chicago City Limits will perform Nov. 29 and Dec. 1 in Valborg Theatre. The group has been seen nationally on ÒThe Tonight ShowÓ and HBO.

2002 opens up with the internationally acclaimed London City Opera performing ÒThe Merry WidowÓ on January 23. The opera focuses on ParisÕs highest class, politics and love. The a cappella group Sweet Honey in the Rock will perform Feb. 19. The group is an ensemble of six African American women Ð their voices are rooted in gospel, blues and jazz.

Arkansas Repertory Theatre performs ÒArt,Ó a story about three friends who lose their bond over a piece of artwork, March 5. The troupe consists of gymnasts, cyclists, tumblers and jugglers.

The Performing Arts Series ends its season with ÒThe Hallelujah Project,Ó performed by the Liz Lerman Dance Company, April 27. All performances will be in Farthing Auditorium, unless otherwise noted.

Those purchasing season ticket on or before July 15 will be eligible for a 15% discount. For season ticket purchases after July 15, a 10% discount will be offered.

Season tickets for purchases before July 15 are $61.20 for students or $122.40 for the general public. To order tickets call the Farthing Box Office at 262-4046.
