APP Summerfest in full swing tonight

Tonight the Broyhill Chamber Ensemble performs at 8 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall, located in the Broyhill Music Center. TonightÕs performance is the second of six concerts scheduled to perform this month.

The ensemble includes Gil Morgenstern, violin and artistic director; Carol Cook, viola, Darrett Adkins, cello; Linda Chesis, flute; Shirley Irek, piano and Brian Zeger, piano.

Guest artists include Kurt Nikkanen, violin; Nancy Bargerstock, violin; Peter Donovan, bass; Adam Rafferty, guitar; Kay Borkowski, flute; Lynn Parkerson, choreographer; and dancers Thomas Baird, Paige Whitley-Baugess, Naomi Tolome and Francis Jaena Jr.

The following selections will be performed tonight: Bela BartokÕs ÒRumanian Folk Dancers,Ó HindemithÕs Viola Sonata in F Major, Op. 11, No. 4; MartinuÕs ÒVariations on a Slovak ThemeÓ and DvorakÕs Piano Trio in e minor, Op. 90 (ÒDumkyÓ).

The ensembleÕs third performance is Wednesday, July 11 at 8 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. MozartÕs Piano Quartet in E-Flat Major K. 493; George TsontakisÕ ÒBagatelles for Piano QuartetÓ and Cesar FranckÕs Piano Quintet in f minor will be performed.

As part of the festivalÕs ÒWorks in Progress Series,Ó a theatre reading entitled ÒGuest from the FutureÓ will be presented tomorrow night in Volborg Theater at 8 p.m.

ÒGuestÓ is set in 1945, after the end of World War II when the British philosopher Isaiah Berlin returned to his native Russia. Davis Chambers serves as director.

The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra will perform Saturday at 8 p.m. in Farthing Auditorium. The orchestra is a 17-piece unit that performs Big Band music and jazz. David Baker, chairmen of the jazz department at Indiana University is the director.

Storyteller Milbre Burch will perform ÒThe World is a StorytellerÕs VillageÓ Sunday at 2 p.m. in Valborg Theatre.

ÒWorldÓ is a family oriented spoken word concert of tales from Latin, Native American, African, Afro-Caribbean, Asian and European cultures.

The Eastern Music Festival Orchestra performs Sunday at 8 p.m. in Farthing Auditorium. Heiichiro Ohyama serves as conductor and cellist Gary Hoffman and violinist Cho-Liang Lin are guest performers.

Ballet Hispanico performs Tuesday, July 10 at 8 p.m. in Farthing Auditorium. Artistic director Tina Ramirez founded ballet Hispanico in 1970. The company has been on tour both nationally and internationally. The company offers a year-round school of dance in Manhattan, New York.
