    For the first time in the short history of the George M. Holmes Convocation Center, the Appalachian State University men’s basketball team is undefeated on its home court.
   The Mountaineers (8-3) have won their first seven games in the three-year-old arena, including two Southern Conference bouts against the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and North Division heavyweight East Tennessee State University.
    Appalachian thoroughly defeated the UNCG Spartans this past weekend 91-60.
   The Mountaineers controlled the game from the beginning shooting 45 percent from the field, including first half double-digit performances from Shawn Hall, Graham Bunn and Chris McFarland.
Appalachian controlled the boards throughout the first half as well, pulling down 31 rebounds to the Spartans’ 13.

Adopt-an-App program helps bring students to the convocation center for basketball games this season. The idea was suggested by Toby Madison, first year assistant coach for Appalachians men’s team.

 

  The George M. Holmes Convocation Center is experiencing something not typical of the last couple seasons: the roar of an exciting crowd. There are a number of causes for this recent development, including a 7-3 start by the Mountaineers and the start of the Adopt-an-App program by the men’s basketball team.
   Adopt-an-App is the idea of first-year Appalachian State University assistant coach Toby Madison.


Intramural basketball season begins with preseason tournament Brad Norman

   The basketball fans at Appalachian State University are in for a busy month of competition with the many intramural games University Recreation (UREC)has planned for January.
   Preseason intramural basketball begins Jan. 21 and teams of five can still sign up today. There will be 16 teams, each playing three to four games during this week.
   Assistant director of University Recreation Eddie Simmons said because basketball is such a popular sport, UREC will host preseason play in addition to the regular season leagues.
