ASU win over VMI secures conference regular season title Allie Woods

ASU’s Travis Drake won his match at VMI by techanical fall 16-1. The two-time Soutnern Confernece Wrestler of the Year, Drake provided for the squad’s championship win.
   With an impressive 26-6 victory over Virginia Military Institute, the Appalachian State University grapplers captured the Southern Conference regular season title.
    The victory ended the Mountaineers’ SoCon schedule with a perfect 5-0 record and began the Keydet season with a loss to make them 0-1.
    ASU jumped out to a commanding lead by winning the first four matches of the night.
    Senior tone-setters Rich Caisse and Travis Drake started out the night by picking up eight team points off a Caisse decision and technical fall for Drake.
    Sophomores Eric Burns and Jason Jones continued the winning ways with victories at the 141 and 149 pound divisions.

Davidson claims victory over Appalachian, second SoCon loss Josh Dernosek

   The Appalachian State University men’s basketball team received their second conference loss of the season at the hands of Davidson College Saturday 99-86.
    After a huge victory over Western Carolina University in Boone the Mountaineers looked to improve their already impressive record at Davidson, but the Wildcats had different plans.
    With six Wildcat players scoring double figures, it was obvious the No. 1 ranked offense of the Mountaineers had their work cut out for them.
    Senior Wayne Bernard led the way for Davidson netting 25 points on 7-of-11 from the field, dishing out six assists and tallying three steals. Senior Michel Lusakueno and sophomore Conor Grace both posted double-doubles in the winning effort.
    Senior Shawn Hall returned to action and was the leading scorer for Appalachian, recording 23 points on the afternoon.

   The Appalachian State University women’s basketball team traveled to Johnson City, Tenn., Saturday to face conference foe East Tennessee State University (ETSU).
   Although Appalachian was down by seven going into the locker room after the first half, losing was not an option for the black and gold this day. After two halves of basketball the lady Mountaineers held a 76-65 lead and earned the victory at the expense of the Buccaneers.
Team claims number one spot for Appalachian tournament, 4-0 Brad Norman
Club/ Intramural Sports Beat
   The Appalachian State University Club Volleyball team used the momentum from a good fall semester and transformed it into an outstanding showing during their first tournament of the spring semester.
    The one-day tournament was held last Saturday in Chapel Hill and consisted of 10 club teams from around the region.
