Team claims number one spot for Appalachian tournament, 4-0 Brad Norman
Club/ Intramural Sports Beat
The Appalachian State University Club Volleyball team used the momentum from a good fall semester and transformed it into an outstanding showing during their first tournament of the spring semester.
The one-day tournament was held last Saturday in Chapel Hill and consisted of 10 club teams from around the region.
ACC schools Wake Forest University, Duke University, North Carolina State University and two squads from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill were among the 10 participating schools.
The teams were broken up into pools of five, and each team played each other once in pool play.
Appalachian defeated East Carolina University, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, The University of North Carolina at Wilmington and UNCCH in pool play to put themselves at 4-0 and claimed a No. 1 seed for the tournament that followed pool play.
Despite their dominance, the Mountaineers fell to NC State in the semi-finals 25-19.
“We played extremely well during pool play,” president and captain Lindsay Lamb said.
“This was the best tournament that we have played since we started during the fall semester. We had awesome blocks, awesome defense and an overall great performance.”
Enhancing the already great chemistry on the team is newcomer Chrissy Hinshaw, whose blocking ability is complemented by her 6-foot, 3-inch frame.
“Our team really meshed well together this weekend,” freshman Erin Dula said. “Chrissy did really well with us. NC State shouldn’t have beat us, but they did. I really feel that we were the better team.”
“Chrissy’s personality is also a great asset, because we get along really well,” setter Meredith Russell said.
Russell, who serves as the team’s only setter, also had an outstanding tournament. She played every minute of all nine games.
“I’m actually used to it by now,” Russell said of her non-stop action.
One other key difference between this semester and last semester, besides the team chemistry, is the will to win.
Toward the beginning of the year, the club was concerned with going out and playing its hardest. Now, they expect to win every match.
“We really came out confident that we were going to win the entire tournament,” Dula said.
“We’ve had a lot of success during the pool play, but we need to step up during tournament play,” Russell said.
The Mountaineers will have their chance to step up on Feb. 22 when they travel to Knoxville, Tennessee for their next tournament.
The tournament will be hosted by the University of Tennessee Volunteers.
