The annual Student Discount Card, having undergone a major overhaul, is scheduled to make its debut within the next week.
The card, organized by the Student Government Association (SGA) , includes 103 businesses in Boone and Blowing Rock where card holders receive a discount.
Alicia J. Walker, director of External Affairs, said SGA made a major effort this year to make the card more widely used.
“Putting it out at a later date helps the student recognize it better, versus the beginning of school where there’s a ton of things in your box and you don’t really differentiate,” said Walker. “It’s a [six-panel] card this year that folds out, that lists the businesses in alphabetical order along with the discounts.”
“We’re hoping that [the new format] helps the student recognize what it is a bit more and use it more effectively,” said Walker.
“Word of mouth is also a big thing,” said Lauren N. Linville, director of Internal Affairs. “We’ve been trying to tell students about all the businesses that will be on the card.”
Cabinet members also said an effort had been made to get both a larger amount and variety of businesses on the card.
“We tried to look for businesses that people use in their spare time, besides eating,” said Rachel A. Johnson, director of Academic Affairs.
The 103 locations on the card are an increase of 21 businesses from last year.
“It didn’t work out exactly the way we planned. Some of the businesses [from last year] didn’t want to be in it or couldn’t be contacted,” said Johnson.
