Forums hear student, staff issues

• Undergrads make weak showing at chancellor forums

While a few undergraduate students did attend the Chancellor Search Forums last week, there was a consistent presence by graduate students and Appalachian State University staff members.

The two groups were present at each forum to ask questions to each of the six candidates, one of whom may be selected as the next chancellor.

Graduate Student Association Senator Bradley Miller said there were certain issues he hoped the candidates would address.

ACT offers Spring Break alternatives

For anyone interested in escaping the stereotypical Spring Break activities, Appalachian State University’s Alternative Spring Break programs offer an outlet.

“Alternative Breaks are a nationwide trend on hundreds of college campuses,” Jenny R. Koehn, Appalachian & the Community Together community service coordinator said.

Koehn said ACT’s programs offer students a chance for a meaningful Spring Break experience of volunteer service, friendship building and self-renewal.

Broyhill Inn serves up all-you-can-eat buffet

Appalachian State University students can now enjoy a beautiful view of the snowy hills, delightful piano music and an all-you-can-eat buffet with enough food to satisfy any empty stomach.

The Jackson Dining Room of Broyhill Inn & Conference Center now accepts students’ Appalachian Meal and Appalachian Express cards.

Executive Chef Troy Byrum said this January has been the busiest ever.

Large chain drugstore pushes out local businesses in future move

Walgreens pharmacy has a permit to build a 14,400-square-foot store in Boone that will force several local businesses to relocate.

George Cole, planning supervisor for the town of Boone, said that Walgreens applied for and received a special-use permit to build a new store at the intersection of Blowing Rock Road and Meadowview Drive, where several businesses are already located.

“It’s another retail opportunity for the residents and visitors to the town,” Cole said.

M&M Development Company of Tennessee is heading construction of the new store.

Student Ambassadors kick off membership drive this week

The Appalachian Student Ambassadors invite students to join in their efforts to promote the highlights of Appalachian State University.

The Ambassadors kicked off the semester last week with their spring membership drive. The drive will run through Friday.

“[The Ambassadors] are a special group and we value their role as representatives to the student body, to prospective students and families, and to the friends of the University,” Patrick K. Setzer, advisor to the Ambassadors said.

Appalachian Ambassadors is a group funded by Appalachian State University through the Club Council. The members work directly with the Alumni Association, University Admissions and the Office of the Chancellor year round coordinating and hosting various events and activities.

“As Ambassadors we show how much we love our university and are committed to making this place better,” Ambassador Priscilla C. Meek said.

A black Toyota Tacoma teeters on the edge of a ledge at "the firetower" close to Howard's Knob Sunday night. Witnesses said the driver of the truck sped up the snow-covered dirt road, and alcohol may have been a factor. Hampton's Body Shop was called to pull the truck from its perch.
