Our Perspective
... Recent snow offers escape
from stress
|
Another
semester is underway here at Appalachian State University.
For some it’s the very first and for fortunate others
it may be the last. But graduation and summer vacation are
still a speck on the horizon.
It’s that time of the year where classes and the daily
routine are still fresh and exciting. A time when you still
don’t know who’s who in your class … or
whether you’ll stick with that class.
For most there are no grueling exams or term papers to worry
about. If there are, we’d like to remind you the last
day to drop classes is March 22.
Even at The Appalachian we’re just getting back into
the swing of things and so far nothing has gone wrong.
So far.
For those of you who are trudging to your 8 a.m. class bundled
up like Ralphie’s brother from “A Christmas Story,”
we encourage you to not fret over these nasty Boone winter
days.
Before you know it spring will blossom over the high country
again, complete with Frisbees, dogs with no particular owner,
and drum circles.
It is easy to stress over the trivial things life throws
our way while we’re locked indoors keeping warm.

| Opinions are thoughts of individual columnist |
From the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language:
“opinion n. 1. A belief or conclusion held with confidence
but not sustained by positive knowledge or proof. 2. A judgment
or estimation of the worth or value of a person or thing.”
Shall I continue?
From Webster’s New World Thesaurus: “opinion,
n. 1. [A belief]—Syn. Notion, view, sentiment, conception,
idea, surmise, impression, inference, conjuncture, inclination,
fancy, supposition, suspicion, notion, guess, theory, thesis,
theorem, postulate, hypothesis … ” whew.
Get it?
Now, to quote from a letter to the editor responding to staff
writer Leslie Rasimas’s OPINION column titled “Grandma’s
knitting bag a big hit with the Greeks,” student Anna
Johnson said: “not only was I appalled by the sweeping
generalizations made by your staff writer, but was even more
surprised that The Appalachian which ‘strives to provide
fair and accurate news for the campus community’ published
such a superficial and meaningless article.”

| Independent music is getting more exposure |
The recent confirmation of the Pixies reunion at the Coachella
Festival in California only furthers my belief that independent
music might finally overrun the pop industry’s stranglehold.
With the increase in file sharing and downloads over the
Internet, independent labels are getting more and more exposure
to fans that have never been exposed to anything not played
on VH1 or MTV.
The Pixies highly-touted reunion only further staples the
fact that more and more people care more about music than
Britney Spears’ latest affair or Fred Durst’s
terrible, terrible, TERRIBLE taste.
Now I’m not going to rant about the myriad of musical
epiphanies I had when I first listened to the tight guitar
riffing heard on “Alec Eiffel,” but I will say
that I couldn’t believe that there was music this good,
this raw, this fantastic made before the ‘90s, or furthermore,
before Nirvana. continued
