Our Perspective ... ASU: stealing from poor to feed rich

Low-cost housing sounds like an oxymoron in Boone. In any other city, one might imagine the phrase describing run-down government apartments.

Not in Boone.

In Boone, some would argue that the recently-constructed University Highlands are "low-cost housing."

True, in relation to other housing options for Appalachian State University students, expenses at Highlands are low.

Don't get on Panther bandwagon if not a fan
GO CAROLINA PANTHERS! I LOVE YOU!

Wait, what am I saying? I am not even a Panthers fan.

Before I became such a fan, did I even know that we had a football team? Did I really even know their name?

I did not even really watch their games until they were competing for the National Football Conference Championship.

Yet, why I am rooting for them and pretending to give a hoot?

Proposal for NASA distracts from real problem
A couple of weeks ago, President George W. Bush announced to the nation that he plans to have Americans back on the moon by 2020, in addition to a manned mission to Mars.

As always, a few questions arise for me about Bush’s intentions, but this time a few questions also arise about the NASA program itself.

Following a year that added $374 billion to the federal deficit, which, according to USA Today, is the largest deficit on record, and preceding the year that is estimated to add an additional $500 billion to that number (New York Times), Bush promises a new age in space exploration, and with it billions of taxpayer dollars to fund it.
