For a few minutes late in the second half it looked like Appalachian State University would blow another lead and lose another heartbreaker.

But Kiki Conyers hit a long jump shot and Jocelyn Wyatt made two clutch free throws in the final minute of play to give ASU a 73-68 victory of University of North Carolina at Greensboro, their first win over the Spartans in Boone since 1998.

“We’re extremely excited about the win,” head coach Adrienne Shuler said. “We needed a win in the worst way possible and it couldn’t have come at a better time.”

The only first-place finisher for the women’s team was Marvi Mercado with a blistering time of 5:18.60 in the one mile run. Katie Poole of Furman University finished second at 5:20.40.

The Paladins put together a 17-point run from 12 minutes left to 6 minutes in the first half. They extended their lead to 32-8, until Corwin Davis hit a 3-pointer to end the drought.
