Appalachian State University will host the annual Summer Camp Jobs Fair in Plemmons Student Union Feb. 10. The fair provides an opportunity for students to learn about the benefits of working in summer camps.

“Camps allow Appalachian State University students the opportunity to be a leader and the participants to mature,” health, leisure and exercise professor Dr. Kevin W. Riley said.

According to a publicity flyer, the fair, sponsored by the Recreation Management Association, Career Development Center and the Office of Conferences and Institutes, is held to provide students the opportunity to find summer and year-round employment with camps, conference centers, outfitters, recreation departments, resorts and more.

“Close to 75 organizations from around the country will be at the fair recruiting staff,” Riley said.

This year, representatives from North Carolina, Virginia, Alabama, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and California will attend the fair.

“The program gives Appalachian State students the opportunity to work outside of the state,” Extension Education and Training specialist Fay M. Binning said.

For seniors, the fair is an opportunity to find and prepare for a full-time job, and for underclassmen it is a chance to find a summer job.

“The fair has been extremely successful in the past,” Riley said.

“I really want tons of people to show up,” Binning said. “The more underclassmen the better.”

The community is also invited to the Summer Camps Jobs Fair.

“The fair is a community and campus outreach program,” Riley said.

“The fair is a great recruiting tool for the representatives involved,” Binning said. “Appalachian State is one of the best universities around for producing great outdoor leaders.”

The school is also offering a Camp*Us Connection workshop on Feb. 9 in Plemmons Student Union to coincide with the Summer Camp Jobs Fair. According to a press release, the workshop, which will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., is an educational opportunity for students to learn about the benefits of working in a summer camp.

“It is a way for students to gain confidence,” Riley said.

The fair is open Feb. 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
