Keydets out maneuver Mountaineers, deny Coach Mance 300th win

The Virginia Military Institute Keydets finished what they started Sunday afternoon, out-wrestling Appalachian State University 20-18 at Varsity Gym. In the process they denied ASU of giving head coach Paul Mance his 300th victory.

It all came down to the 197 lbs match, pitting senior Jason Cox, 27-8 on the year, against the former freshmen All-American, Josh Carroll, wrestling in just his seventh match this season.
“We put a lot of pressure on him,” Mance said.

ASU's continuous losses, back to back road games wear heavily on team

The Appalachian State University women’s basketball team dropped the first two games of their three-game road trip, losing to Davidson College Feb. 3 and Furman University Feb. 7.

Appalachian came into the Davidson game with an upset in mind, but quickly fell behind in the opening minutes. Davidson built on their lead and thoroughly dominated ASU throughout the first half. Appalachian shot just 18 percent during the first half and committed 14 turnovers en route to a 37-17 halftime score.

ASU adds 11 scholarship recipients
Appalachian State University signed eight football recruits on initial signing day and added three more players days later, giving the program 11 new scholarship players.

The crown jewel of the recruiting class is quarterback Trey Elder, who was Mr. Football for South Carolina in 2003. Elder is a quarterback from the Richie Williams mold, in the sense that he’s tall, lanky (6-foot-1, 180 pounds) and he can run.

Club hockey skates out of rut

The Appalachian State University club ice hockey team looks to snap a two-game losing streak as they head to Pineville, Feb. 13, to take on Clemson University.

“We want to do well and get out of this rut,” senior defenseman and team president B.J. Radhe said.

ASU, 3-5 in the Blue Ridge Hockey Conference, has had its share of ups and downs on the ice this year.

“There’s some struggling going on,” Radhe said.
