Student finds fame on 'Today' show

Hard work and devotion have paid off for Appalachian State University senior electronic and media broadcast major Charlotte M. Langley.

Last week, Langley made it to national television on the weeklong special “The Intern” on NBC’s morning show, “Today.”

Modeled after NBC’s “The Apprentice,” the program gave eight NBC interns a variety of producer-related tasks. Each morning the interns would be evaluated and one intern would be “fired” until there were four interns remaining.

“The whole week was exhausting but very worth it,” Langley said.

Immigrant students call ASU new home

Anyone walking around Appalachian State University may notice different languages and accents coming from students of different nationalities.

Some of these students attend ASU as part of the Study Abroad program and some students are here temporarily to attend school. But some of these students with international backgrounds grew up in other countries and are now American citizens.

Visiting Writers Series welcomes poet, 'incredible performer' Shabazz

Writer Phillip Shabazz performs March 18 in the Linville Falls room of Plemmons Student Union as part of the Visiting Writers Series.

Shabazz, a native of Louisville, Ky., and graduate of the University of Louisville, has written several books of poetry, including “Freestyle and Visitation” published in 1997 by Big Drum Press. He has also edited several anthologies. Shabazz resides in Durham, N.C.

'Men of Appalachian' calendars to help ADPi fight against cancer

The sisters of Alpha Delta Pi help support the fight against cancer with their 2004 “Men of Appalachian” calendar drive.

Alpha Delta Pi usually sponsors Casino Night every year to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House in Winston-Salem. Former philanthropy chair Heather M. Hefner said the organization raised $3,750 for the cause last year.

This year ADPi is raising money for a cause closer to home.

Making the connection: Boone's Greenway to meet ASU campus?

The Greenway Committee wants to extend the Boone Greenway to connect with the Appalachian State University campus.

The proposed route would begin where the current route terminates behind Wal-Mart and the Southgate Shopping Center, following Leola Street, Greenway Drive, Winkler’s Creek Road, and Wilson Drive to connect with sidewalks on N.C. Highway 105.

Leadership 101 continues today

The Leadership 101 conference continues today with Communication 101 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in Calloway Peak in Plemmons Student Union. Discussion will focus around effective communication in organizations.

2004 FAFSA deadline approaches March 15
The priority deadline to complete the 2004-05 Free Application for Federal Student Aid is March 15. The online application can be found at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

ACLU sponsors movie on 'police encounters'
Appalachian State University's chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union will sponsor "Busted: The citizen's guide to surviving police encounters" March 3. The movie will be shown in Whitewater, on the second floor of Plemmons Student Union, at 7 p.m.

Judo lovers invited to join ASU's Aikido Club
Judo enthusiasts looking for a club to exercise their right to self-defense need look no further than the Aikido Club. Hosted below the Varsity Gymnasium in Room 6, the club meets every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6-7:30 p.m. Contact Mike Kresznock for more information at 262-6156.

Playhouse sponsors massage marathon
The Playhouse in Boone will host a Massage Marathon March 2-6. Five licensed massage therapists will volunteer their time and all proceeds to to the Playhouse. Volunteers will also be available to play with children during the sessions. Sessions are $1 per minute at 15- and 30-minute intervals. Morning and noon slots are available.
