'Men of Appalachian' calendars to help ADPi fight against cancer

The sisters of Alpha Delta Pi help support the fight against cancer with their 2004 “Men of Appalachian” calendar drive.

Alpha Delta Pi usually sponsors Casino Night every year to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House in Winston-Salem. Former philanthropy chair Heather M. Hefner said the organization raised $3,750 for the cause last year.

This year ADPi is raising money for a cause closer to home.

Kara V. Foster, public relations chair, said Alpha Delta Pi created the “Men of Appalachian” calendar last semester after learning two of its sisters were struggling with cancer, either personally or within their families. All proceeds from calendar purchases go directly to these two families.

“At the end of the calendar sales we hope to raise $5,000, and so far we have reached the $2,000 mark,” Foster said.

To produce the calendars, the ADPi members sent letters to various Appalachian State University clubs and organizations that each nominated three possible candidates for the calendar.

Caitlin D. Lally, current philanthropy chair, said 18 candidates were selected after an interview process on a basis of their contribution to the community, scholarship and “good looks.”

The production of the calendars, put together by Precision Printing, was made possible by donations from various businesses, organizations, families and friends.

“Because of the generous donations given by the community, families and friends, which are listed on the back of the calendars, the profit made from the calendars will directly benefit the families of our sisters during their time of need,” Foster said.

The calendars are being sold tax-free for $10 at The Emporium, upstairs in the Greek Store and on the fourth floor of Cone Residence Hall.
