| Freshman Williams leads reserves
in win over Catamounts, 72-64 |
by Brad Norman Senior Staff Writer
With 13:50 left in the game and Appalachian State University clinging
to a two-point lead, Adrienne Shuler yanked all five of her players
off the court after a sequence of open bickering and frustration.
The move turned out to be golden.
Appalachian went on a 25-18 run over the next 10 minutes to preserve
a 72-64 win Saturday against Western Carolina University. Although
the win does not do anything for the Mountaineers’ tournament
seeding, it will undoubtedly give them some momentum going into
the Southern Conference tournament tomorrow. continued

The story of the long Appalachian State University and Western Carolina
University rivalry added another chapter Saturday, after Western
went on a 31-10 run to end the game and earned an 86-69 home victory.
With 8:34 left to play, D.J. Thompson hit a three-pointer to stretch
the ASU advantage to 59-55. Corey Muirhead calmly went down to the
other end of the court and hit a return three to cut the lead to
one and seemingly declare: it was on.

by Brad Norman
Senior Staff Writer
If there were ever a possibility for a Cinderella story in the Southern
Conference basketball tournament, it is this year’s Appalachian
State University squad.
ASU will open the tournament by playing host College of Charleston
(19-8, 11-5) tomorrow night. Should the Mountaineers win, the rest
of the road to the NCAA Tournament looks like this, assuming the
top seeds win out: against University of Tennessee at Chattanooga
(17-10, 10-6), against Georgia Southern University (20-7, 11-5)
and against East Tennessee State University (24-5, 15-1).
