Search committees for seven chair positions in three colleges are
looking for candidates to represent Appalachian State University
and fill the positions permanently.
Chairpersons are needed in the College of Arts and Sciences for
biology, geology and philosophy and religion.
The College of Fine and Applied Arts looks to fill the positions
of chairpersons in health, leisure and exercise science and technology.
Walker College of Business needs permanent chairpersons for the
department of informational technology and operations management
and the department of management.
Dr. Loren A. Raymond, chair of the geology search committee, said
the committee has narrowed the search to two candidates.
After the second candidate visits Appalachian State University,
the committee’s recommendation will be sent to the interim
dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Stan R. Aeschleman.
“[The committee] will rank the two candidates according to
which we find better suited for the position. We should be meeting
some time this week to make our decisions,” Raymond said.
Dr. Wayne Williams, chair of the health, leisure and exercise science
search committee, said the committee interviewed three people for
the chair position.
“This is not a high-turnover position. We are doing this search
because our chair, Dr. Vaughn Christian, has retired. He was chair
for almost 17 years,” Williams said.
Williams said names of candidates could not be released due to the
Personnel Act.
Sandra C. Sanders, administrative assistant in the College of Arts
and Sciences, said the faculty elects the search committees to represent
each college.
“Faculty members are nominated by other faculty to serve on
the search committees. When final decisions are made by the search
committees, the dean will make his decision,” she said.
Dawn B. Sheppard, administrative assistant in Walker College of
Business, said the position of chair in the department of management
would depend upon who fills the position of dean.
“Dr. Lyle F. Schoenfeldt is the acting dean for the college,
and Dr. Stella E. Anderson is the acting chair for the department
of management,” she said. “Decisions cannot be made
for the chair until decisions are made for the position of dean.”
Dr, Kenneth E. Peacock was dean for Walker College of Business until
his appointment as interim provost in June 2003.
Chairpersons will be selected and announced over the next few weeks,
and announcements should come from the offices of the deans, Williams
said.
