Dr. Stanley R. Aeschleman will serve as Appalachian State University’s
interim provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs effective
July 1.
“I am honored and pleased to be a part of the most exciting
time for Appalachian. This came as a surprise to me, and a surprise
to many of the faculty, considering my administrative experience
is limited,” Aeschleman said.
Aeschleman is currently interim dean for the College of Arts and
Sciences. He removed himself from the current search for a new dean
when Chancellor-elect Dr. Kenneth E. Peacock appointed Aeschleman
as interim provost.
Aeschleman began his career at Appalachian in 1989 as a professor
of psychology. From 1996 to 1998, Aeschleman served as director
of graduate studies in the department of psychology. In 1998, he
became chairperson for the department of psychology, and remained
in that position until he was appointed as interim dean in 2003.
Aeschleman is currently working with academic departments to get
a better understanding of what needs to be done for the university,
he said.
“I am meeting with the deans of the colleges, people from
the library and other representatives from academic affairs. I want
to know what they feel is important, and how we can help move the
university forward in this time of change,” he said.
Assistant professor for the department of psychology Dr. Timothy
J. Huelsman said Aeschleman’s intelligence and interpersonal
skills will make him an excellent interim provost.
“I can honestly say Dr. Aeschleman has been the best chair
to work with. He is extraordinarily bright,” Huelsman said.
“His major strength is his organizational skills. He knows
how to set up systems or protocols for decision-making, and he has
a transparent decision-making process. He lets people know what
he is always doing,” Huelsman said.
