The worst-hitting team in the Southern Conference continued their
woes at the plate last weekend at the Hokie Fastpitch Club Classic,
hosted by Virginia Tech. The Appalachian State University Mountaineers
softball team scored 12 runs in five games.
ASU 3, Mount St. Mary’s 1
The Mountaineers got the tournament off to the right start Friday,
led by a strong pitching performance from Jordan Arnold.
“We just dominated from the beginning,” ASU head coach
Willie Rucker said.
Arnold pitched a complete game two-hitter, allowing only one unearned
run in the winning effort. Amber Handy went 2-3 from the plate and
scored the first run of the game.
“[Handy] had an incredible game,” Rucker said.
Wendy Lewis and Sarah Gough scored the winning and insurance runs,
respectively.
ASU 4, St. Francis (PA) 1
Appalachian State won their second game of the afternoon Friday,
tying their season-high nine hits.
Candace Shelton and Diana Cook led the ASU offensive effort. Shelton
went 3-3, drove in a run, scored two of her own and stole three
bases. Cook went 2-3 and knocked in two runs.
Jennifer Hurley threw another sterling game for the Mountaineers,
pitching seven innings and giving up one run on two hits.
Hurley got into trouble in the first, giving up a solo home run
to Siobhan Gerber.
Hurley then retired the last 18 batters to cruise for the victory.
ETSU 5, ASU 4
In a non-conference match-up between conference foes, the Buccaneers
edged out the Mountaineers on Saturday.
Heather Bradbury got into trouble early, giving up four runs on
seven hits in just 2.2 innings.
Already down 4-0 after three, ASU did not give up, putting in three
runs to close the ETSU lead. Shelton, Christa Hicks and Lindsay
Glover all scored in the fourth inning. Shelton was 2-4 at the plate
to lead ASU.
Virginia Tech 6, ASU 0
The Mountaineers were shut down in their second game of Saturday
afternoon, registering just four hits.
The Hokies broke things open in the second, scoring four runs.
Marie Watson left for the Mountaineers after just 2.2 innings, having
already given up four runs on nine hits.
“She didn’t give up any big hits, just little dinks,”
Rucker said.
Hurley came in and pitched the rest of the way, the only blemish
being a two-run homer in the fifth to Ciara Chaffee.
Marshall 9, ASU 1
Only Glover prevented the Mountaineers from being no-hit and shutout
by the Thundering Herd on Sunday.
Jordan Arnold could not make it three straight outstanding appearances,
allowing nine runs, seven earned, on 11 hits in five innings.
Amanda Williams and Sarah Williams both drove in three runs.
Jessica Williams picked up a pair of RBIs in the win.
In the bottom of the fourth, Cook reached first courtesy of a walk
with one out.
Glover then plated Cook with a two-out triple to left-center field,
the only ASU hit of the afternoon. |
