Lo and behold: I discovered one of the greatest albums of this year.

When one talks about meshing styles and genres together, it usually comes off as some mish-mashed attempt by a producer (The Neptunes, anyone?) to make a name for himself by compromising the artist.

Well, forget about blending genres. Just take two definitive albums from two definitive eras and mix them together.

I’m referring to DJ Dangermouse’s “The Grey Album.” On “The Grey Album,” Dangermouse combines The Beatles’ “The White Album” and Jay-Z’s swansong, “The Black Album.”

Total Pandemonium in Greer through Saturday
by Stephanie Marshall
Staff Writer

Laugh until it hurts with a night of “Total Pandemonium” tomorrow through Saturday in I.G. Greer Arena Theatre at 8 p.m.

Presented by the department of theatre and dance, the night of “Total Pandemonium” includes one acts “The Actor’s Nightmare” and “The Real Inspector Hound.”

Written by Christopher Durang and directed by Mandi S. McCallister, “The Actor’s Nightmare” is about an accountant named George Spelvin, played by Adam P. Ray, who comes into a theater by accident. He is pushed into a Hamlet costume and thrown on stage, mistaken for Edwin Booth's understudy. The play he is thrown into is not “Hamlet,” however, but another play, and truly becomes an actor’s nightmare.

Cafe Portofino dishes out Matone on Friday
by Dusty Teng

Matone makes its first trip to Boone Friday with a performance at Cafe Portofino. The Charlotte-based band has built a strong following in the Piedmont area and now moves westward to the mountains.

The group that began eight years ago as a trio has now progressed to the current line-up of guitarist Kyle Donaghy, drummer Matt Elberson, keyboardist David Palmer and bassist Townsend Smith.

“We formed out of mutual friends and acquaintances, out of ads in newspapers and ads online,” Donaghy said.
