Baseball loses two to Cougars
ASU 1 CofC 17

Appalachian State University had a season-high seven errors and got hammered Friday by College of Charleston, 17-1.

Nick Peterson allowed nine runs, only four of them earned, in five innings of work and got his fourth loss of the season.

The Cougars took advantage of four ASU errors in the third inning to take a quick 5-0 lead. Charleston scored four more runs the next inning to increase their lead to 9-0.

Trailing 17-0 in the ninth inning, Brooks Haislip loped a double into centerfield and scored on a wild pitch to net the only run of the game for the Mountaineers.

Cougar starter Reed Price went eight innings, allowing seven hits and striking out five.

ASU 10 CofC 12

The Cougars put up double-digit runs again Saturday, but so did the Mountaineers.

Appalachian’s 10 runs were not enough, however, and they lost their second straight game to C of C, 14-10.

C of C jumped out a 5-0 again, but Appalachian managed to counter with four runs in the third inning. Freshmen Ryan Merz smashed a three-run homer to move ASU within a run (5-4). The homerun was Merz’s third of the year.

The Cougars jumped over relief pitcher Taylor Craig in the seventh inning to take an onerous 12-6 lead.

ASU fought back in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four runs to bring the game within two runs at 12-10.

They would not get any closer, as Cougar closer Brett Harker held ASU scoreless the final two innings.

Softball splits double-header

ASU 7 ETSU 2

Jordan Arnold pitched a complete game Saturday to give the Mountaineers a win in the first game of their double header against East Tennessee State University.

Arnold allowed four hits and zero earned runs on the afternoon.

The Mountaineers scored five runs in the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie and claim the win, 7-2.

With the score at 3-2 in ASU’s favor, Amber Handy hit a bases-loaded single to drive in two runs. Candace Shelton laced a single of her own the next at-bat, driving in two more runs.

Handy finished the game with two hits, three runs and a stolen base.

Arnold collected the win, moving her record to 5-4.

ASU 3 ETSU 4

In game two, ASU picked up where they left off in the first game, scoring three runs in the first inning to claim an early 3-0 lead.

However, those would be the only runs Appalachian scored all day.

ETSU brought in reliever Courtney Jenkins who shut the Mountaineers down the rest of the afternoon.

ETSU scored three runs in the third inning to tie the score and took the lead for good in the seventh inning off Janine Sprague’s solo homerun.

Appalachian went down in order in the bottom of the seventh, giving ETSU the game two win, 4-3.

ASU claims two Athletes of Week

Men’s tennis player Jason Nius and track sprinter Ernest Wiggins were named athletes of the week for March 24 in their respective sport.

Nius, a junior, won both of his singles’ matches that week to lead the Mountaineers to two crucial decisions over Wofford College and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Against Wofford’s Jason Mengel, Nius won 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 to give ASU a 4-3 overall victory.

His win against Chattanooga’s Tim Kutshera put him at 4-0 during conference play this season.

Wiggins was named athlete of the week based on his record-setting sprint at the Charlotte 49er classic.

Wiggins won the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.23 seconds.

The time is a Belk Stadium and meet record and automatically qualifies Wiggins for NCAA regionals in May.

Wiggins also placed third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.42 seconds.
