For 19 Appalachian State University students and one Outdoor
Programs coordinator, a sea kayaking/canoeing trip to the
Florida Everglades turned ablaze - literally.
The students were camping along the shoreline of Northwest
Cape in Everglades National Park, Fla., when a wildfire erupted
in the park.
For the sea kayakers, March 9 started out as a day of rest
after two strenuous days of paddling.
Most participants spent their free time napping, sunbathing,
swimming and reading along the sandy beach-line of the cape.
A few members of the kayaking group began cooking dinner:
bean burritos.
The rest of the sea kayakers took the time to rest in tents
set up in the sand. They were all unaware of the excitement
that lay ahead.

A group of nine Appalachian State University students and
one staff member set out to make a big difference in the 300-million-acre
Gila National Park in New Mexico.
Appalachian & the Community Together supported nine trips
this year for Alternative Spring Break, but the trip to New
Mexico was the first of its kind.
Foresters took the students to a section of the park outside
Silver City, N.M.
With funding from the Environmental Protection Agency, Appalachian
students were joined by students from the University of Pittsburgh
in their part of trail maintenance, an area becoming more
neglected by the day.
