Appalachian has tough season; baseball, tennis fall in SoCon

It has been a season of hard luck losses for Nick Peterson, Appalachian State University baseball’s only legitimate ace. That tough luck continued for Peterson last Friday, allowing just four hits in six innings but losing to The Citadel, 6-2, on the road.

The Citadel’s Jonathan Ellis had a career-high outing, striking out 12 ASU batters and spreading out seven hits over seven innings to improve to 4-2 on the season.

The Bulldogs got ahead for good in the first inning, putting in three runs in the bottom half of the frame.

Softball wins one, loses one Saturday

Appalachian State University split a double-header with College of Charleston Saturday in a pair of tight, low scoring games.

ASU won the opener behind the strength of a complete game by Jennifer Hurley.

Hurley pitched a complete game, giving up only one earned run in the 3-2 victory.

Football players dismissed next year

Jonathan W. Lyles and Travis J. Washington, two rising seniors on the Appalachian State University football team, have been dismissed from the program.

“They have been [dismissed] from the team for violation of student-athlete policy,” Director of Athletics Roachel J. Laney said.

Neither Laney nor University Police would specify what the violation was, citing confidentiality laws.
