Our Perspective ... Keep stress down as crunch time approaches

OK, kids. As sure as death and taxes, it’s here again.

You know, the thing that will turn a bright sunshiny day into a gauntlet of sleep depravation, coffee and the occasional cry.

It’s crunch time here at Appalachian State University, that wonderful time between the reverence of Easter and the freedom of Summer where a young man’s fancy turns to thoughts of “Hey, I should quit reading U.N. Resolutions and climb up the nearest bell tower.”

While the light at the proverbial end of the tunnel may seem all but snuffed, relax …it will only get better. In the off chance it doesn’t get better and in fact gets much worse, relax … it will only get uh, worse-er.

Appalachian doesn't need to change, it's fine
Several weeks ago, I was scanning the University News releases when I came across an article titled, “ASU getting set for the big leap.”

“Big leap?” I wondered, as I clicked on the link to the article.

The article, written by reporter Mary Giunca of the Winston-Salem Journal, described Chancellor-elect Kenneth E. Peacock and the challenges that lie ahead of him.

Giunca interviewed Peacock, members of the administration, faculty and students, almost all of whom expressed a need for the university to change.

Change?

Why?

According to the article, some believe that Appalachian has been in a “holding pattern” for several years and lacks a strategic plan for its future. The article also states that Appalachian has essentially been ordered by the state to increase its enrollment by 3,000 by fall 2012.

Little things that bother me, writing helps vent
Occasionally we all want to vent some anger, scream at the innocent or hurt someone who hurts us.

In the past, I have been fortunate enough to use The Appalachian as an outlet for my creativity and malicious attitude, as my fans and foes have noticed.

I have never struggled with an idea for a commentary. But today, so many little things are bothering me, I believe I will take a stand on them all, and not dwell on any particular issue.

This being my last chance to offend, accuse and entertain my peers, please do not become overly insulted. But if you choose to take my words personally, remember you have been warned…
