“Avoid cliches like the plague.” We all know that phrase, and we all use it. Sadly, it has become a cliche unto itself.

Bearing that in mind, Bob Schneider has become a cliche of another cliche.

I’m referring to the all-but-dead horse that easy listening radio has flogged until you don’t know your John Mayers from your Jack Johnsons.

'The Beggar's Opera' marks return of musicals to Valborg

Sing and dance down to the Valborg Theatre April 21 through 25, where the department of theatre and dance presents “The Beggar’s Opera,” the first musical on campus since 2001.

“It is a dark, satiric comedy that has criminals behaving honorably and the upper classes behaving dishonorably,” director and faculty member of department of theatre and dance Derek P. Gagnier said last Thursday.

WASU celebrates 32 years, lends hand to 'Africa fights AIDS' event

Help fight AIDS in Africa at WASU 90.5’s 32nd Birthday Bash at Geno’s Sports Restaurant Thursday. The “Africa Fights AIDS” event will feature acts such as alternative rock group Minus Driver and local band Sister Stone. Doors open at 9 p.m. and the bands will begin at 9:30 p.m.

Half of all proceeds will go to Doctors Without Borders/Medicins Sans Frontieres, an international humanitarian aid organization that provides emergency medical assistance in more than 80 countries.

The musical comedy “Beggar’s Opera" will be playing April 21-25 at the Valborg Theatre. Showing times are 8 p.m. every day and a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday. Admission is $6 for students and $10 for general public.

Hayes School of Music presents Jason Hoyle Brass Quintet at 6 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.

Hayes School of Music presents ASU Symphonic Band in Rosen Concert Hall at 8 p.m.

APPS presents “Mountaineer Talent Search” Talent Show in Legends at 8 p.m. Admission is free.

April 22 •
Architexture performs at Murphy’s Restaurant and Pub at 10 p.m. Admission is $5. The show is for ages 21+.

David Via and Corn Tornado performs with Curtis Burch at Canyons Restaurant at 10 p.m. Admission is $10.

Hayes School of Music presents a student piano recital by Chris Howell in the Recital Hall at 6 p.m. and the ASU Symphony Orchestra in Rosen Concert Hall at 8 p.m. Admission is free to both events.

APPS presents “Mystic River” in I.G. Greer at 7 p.m. Admission is $1.

RAQ returns to the mountains for a performance at Boone Saloon. The show starts at 10 p.m. and is for ages 21+.

Local Boone ensemble Banton Dub Tribe performs with Durham-based Dub Addis to bring a night of world music to the High Country. The bands will play at Café Portofino at 10 p.m.
