Our Perspective ... Responsibility for diversity on students

You want it.

You welcome it.

But will you ever see it?

The issue of diversity at Appalachian State University is not one to be easily resolved.

Some even question if it can be resolved.

A new report published by the Division of Student Development discovered low numbers of minority students on campus feel various groups value diversity.

According to the Campus Climate Survey: Part II, 29 percent of minority students believe faculty value diversity while 34 percent feel the administration does.

Columnist reminisces college, newspaper years
Ah, The Appalachian. Who knew I would still be sitting here after applying on a whim my sophomore year?

I will never forget the first day of introduction to journalism my freshman year. I had an adjunct professor who had just left his job at a North Carolina newspaper to fulfill his passion to teach. We were his guinea pigs as he bumbled along about the “real world” or journalism and the truth of the business. The first thing out of his mouth was something that has stuck with me.

“So you all think you are going to be journalists, huh? Well, if you don’t drink, smoke, or swear now, you will once you become a journalist.”

Football players compete for best quarterback
The great quarterback debate of 2004 comes down to three guys: a kid whose famous because his dad and big brother are, another guy nicknamed after a London tourist attraction and the last one, who wins ugly.

Eli Manning is the football equivalent of the kid in high school who was popular because when he was a freshman his older brother dated the prettiest girl and always knew where the best party was. Eli isn’t actually cool; he’s just cool by association because his brother, Peyton, has turned out to be an incredible quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts and his dad, Archie, was a pretty good one back in the 1970s.

In reality what he did in college was quarterback a pretty crappy University of Mississippi team to be a somewhat decent team. The Rebels were never anywhere near being a contender in the Southeastern Conference, much less on a national scale.
