On a game day when the weather in Boone was nicer than it had been in months, Jennifer Hurley’s pitching performance in the second game was even prettier.
After losing 5-0 in the opening game, Hurley made sure the Mountaineers would get a split with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Hurley carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before allowing a double to Kara Clouser.

The ASU bats got hot early in the game and gave Hurley a 4-0 lead before she threw her first pitch.

Leadoff batter Lindsay Glover singled and advanced to third after Mary Lutz reached first base on an error.

Diana Cook hit an RBI single to left field the next at-bat and Christa Hicks followed with a single to center, scoring Lutz.

Appalachian State University secured a bye through the first round of the Southern Conference Championships with a 5-2 win over Davidson College last Saturday afternoon in Boone.

Ben Shuster and Alex Probst took a 9-7 victory over Rob Haywood and Russ Burns in first-seeded doubles play. The teams of Rob Gould/John Bolton and Bryan Stonestreet/ Portus Jetli defeated Jason Nius/Andrew Waters and Andrew Taylor/Dimitar Dimitrov, respectively, to steal the doubles point.

Down 1-0 after doubles play, the Mountaineers took control of singles action to run away with the win.

Probst won in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3, over Will Hamilton in the match-up of each team’s top player.
