When they have time, Tina R. Parlier said she and her family like
to go boating or participate in a church activity. At other times,
she likes to sit down and let the works of Dean Koontz or Stephen
King fill her afternoon.
Parlier currently serves as president-elect for Staff Council and
will assume the organization’s top leadership role next fall.
She also works in the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership.
“I [got involved with Staff Council] early 2002, and was shortly
thereafter elected secretary,” she said. The following year,
Parlier was nominated and elected president-elect.
As next year’s president, Parlier said she hopes to continue
the momentum Staff Council has developed with current president
Terri L. Miller.
“She has helped foster a positive attitude so that we feel
like we’re going forward and we’re making a positive
impact and making some change, and I want to follow in her footsteps
and keep everything on that positive level,” Parlier said.
Parlier credits Miller for open communication between Staff Council
and other groups such as Faculty Senate, the Student Government
Association and the university administration.
“We’ll just keep building those relationships,”
she said.
“One thing I would like to do that would be new would be some
sort of professional staff development,” Parlier said.
Similar workshops already exist, but Parlier said she wants them
to be more focused.
Programs would happen once a semester at two or three different
times and would cover topics such as diversity and retirement options.
“I think it’s going to be a great year for her,”
Miller said. “I think she’s going to do a lot of great
things for Staff Council.”
Parlier’s work in CSIL includes training students to take
their roles within their respective organizations. She also helps
to manage budgets for some of the groups or to train their members
how to do it themselves.
Parlier has worked at Appalachian State University for four years
and is a student.
She started her education at Caldwell Community College before coming
to Appalachian State. She is majoring in business administration.
“I originally worked in the college of leadership and educational
studies in the College of Education, and I worked there for six
months before I received a promotion and came here,” she said.
“Working with Tina is great,” Anwar S. Cruter, assistant
director for CSIL, said. “Great personality. I love hanging
out with her."
“It’s stressful in a positive way. If we have stresses,
it’s because we’re working with students. I love working
with students,” Parlier said.
Parlier and her husband Jeff have two sons, Dustin and Devin, as
well as two dogs, Tiny and Tripp. She and her husband are originally
from Boone.
“My roots are here. My family’s here. My husband is
a native as well,” she said. “All of our family’s
from this surrounding area.”
