Student Government Association (SGA) President and Vice-President-elects Miriam N. Makhyoun and Nicholas V. Albu announced their picks for cabinet officers Tuesday afternoon.

“Miriam and I took our time choosing the right individuals, and I’m very confident that we’ll have a very productive year,” Albu said.

“By common characteristics, we want on our cabinet honesty, integrity, diligence, enthusiasm, experience,” Makhyoun said. “Experience definitely played a key part in setting [some] interviews apart.”

Albu said the cabinet will bring diverse political viewpoints and varying levels of experience to the group.

New to SGA entirely are Liam W. Cox, who will assume the position of treasurer, and Maggie A. Geck, the new director of public affairs.

Makhyoun said she has high hopes for Geck.

“She’s just going to be an integral part of SGA, doing activities and heading up functions, integrating the student body in ways that are innovative,” Makhyoun said. “She hasn’t had any SGA experience, but it’s the passion that sets her apart.”

Cox, a senior economics and finance major from Hillsborough, said he became interested in SGA after watching his old roommate, Jonathan D. Kappler.

Kappler served as a senator and ran for SGA president this year.

“This is my first major involvement with SGA,” Cox said. “I thought about running for senator a couple of times, but I’ve kind of been involved in a lot of other things.”

“When I heard about Miriam and Nick winning the election, I became really interested,” Cox said.

Among the returning cabinet members are rules chair Christopher R. Pereira, secretary Michael E.C. Schroeder and director of external affairs Jud Watkins.

Pereira said he feels he is more than qualified to carry his position through the next year.

“One thing I feel, even now, is that I understand the rules chair better than anyone on campus,” Pereira said.

Pereira also said he would like to change some things in the Rules Committee, but added some of those had already been started under his predecessor, Dorothy M. Andrews. Andrews resigned from her position before this year’s run-off election began.

“A lot of those changes were being implemented before I became rules chair,” he said. “You’re not going to see vast changes. I don’t feel it’s a position that needs vast changes at this point. [Rules committee] is a body of advice. It’s a resource, and that’s what we’re going to continue to do next year.”

Winkler Residence Hall senator Corwyn D. Sergent was named director of internal affairs. He said the “Operation: Outreach” program, which in past years has been under his committee, will be discontinued and new ideas for senator-constituency communication will be sought out.
