Ernest Wiggins and Ronda White will be headed to the NCAA Track & Field Championships after posting automatic qualifying finishes at the NCAA East Regional on Saturday.

Behind the strength of Wiggins, the ASU men tied for twentieth in the event, hosted by the University of Florida at Gainesville.

Wiggins posted the top time in preliminaries, speeding down the track with a 10.18 seconds time in the Men’s 100 Meter Dash. Brian Dzingai of Florida State University was close behind, with a time of 10.21.

In the finals, Wiggins assured himself of one final collegiate track meet after a 10.23 seconds finish, beating all comers. Tye Hill of Clemson University was second with a 10.27 time. Dzingai slipped to fifth in the finals.

White assured herself a place in the championships by finishing fifth in the Women’s Triple Jump on Sunday. Her best jump was 42-11.5 feet. Her jump was only 1.75 inches further than Brandy Depland of Georgia Tech University.

Only the top five in each event are assured a place in the national competition.

Suzanne Makinson finished seventh in the Women’s Pole Vault to grab two points for the Mountaineer women. She cleared 12-10 feet, tying her with Chandra Lacombe of the host Gators and Molly Lederman of Yale University.

With six points total, Appalachian State women finished in a nine-place tie for twenty-sixth.

Wiggins led the 4x100 meter relay team to an eighth-place finish in both the preliminaries and finals. With Sean Jackson, Chris Martin and Charles White, the Mountaineers outran Southern Conference rival Western Carolina University both times.

Bob Smith finished a distant 13th in the Men’s Hammer Throw competition. His top throw, 183-08, came on his last attempt.

Smith didn’t come close to previous bests in the shot put, throwing 52-10.75 feet before fouling out on his last two attempts. He finished eighteenth, ahead of only Sam Segond of Rutgers University. Segond fouled on all three attempts.

Bryan Burney finished fifteenth in the Men’s 800 Meter Run preliminaries, running a 1:50.60 time to tie him with Khary Kenyatta of Howard University and just .01 seconds ahead of Logan Jones of the University of Connecticutt.

Martin finished off the ASU men’s contingent with an eighteenth place finish in the Men’s 200 Meter Dash preliminaries. His 21.53 seconds time was a tenth of a second behind George Evans of Lehigh College, but ahead of Airese Currie of Clemson.

White’s sister, Tondra, finished ninth in the triple jump. Her jump of 41-09.75 feet tied her with Nicole Brown of Georgia Southern University.

Ronda figured into three other events. She ran the first leg of the Women’s 4x100 meter relay team. Along with Portia Taylor, Christina Roberts and Jennifer Claud, the group finished eleventh in the preliminaries.

Ronda was twelth in the Women’s 100 Meter Hurdles preliminaries, running a 13.73 time. She was just ahead of Dana Rogers of Georgia Tech.

Ronda finished fourteenth in the Women’s Long Jump, jumping a full 19-06.75 feet.

Claud ran to middle-of-the-pack finishes in two events, the Women’s 100 Meter and 200 Meter Dash Preliminaries. Her time of 11.80 seconds was good enough for fifteenth in the 100 Meter Dash, while she put up a 12th place finish in the 200 Meter Dash with a time of 23.80 seconds.

Crystal Miller, only a sophomore, threw 170-06 feet in the Women’s Hammer Throw to finish twenty-seventh. Her best throw came on her last chance.

White and Wiggins will now head for the University of Texas at Austin from June 9-12 for the NCAA Track Championships.
