Cindy Wallace has taken over the position of interim vice chancellor for student development, Appalachian State University Chancellor Kenneth E. Peacock announced Friday in a news release.

“Ken Peacock talked with me about this being a possibility. It wasn’t something I had really considered before,” Wallace said.

“My whole 20 years here I have worked in academic affairs, and reported up through the provost office. I think what Chancellor Peacock saw is that so many of the programs are done together [with the office of student development and academic affairs].”

No gold in '04 for Wiggins, White

The quest for Athens ended last weekend for two former Appalachian State University athletes. Ronda White and Ernest Wiggins both failed to get out of qualifying rounds during the United States Olympic Team Trials for Track & Field, held in Sacramento, CA.

White competed Thursday in the women’s triple jump qualifying. She finished tenth in her flight, ahead of Brandy Depland of Georgia Tech University and Darcell Edwards of McMurry University.

White’s top jump came on her first try, landing 12.31 meters away from where she started. This was a disappointing mark for White, considering she cleared 13.09 meters last May at the NCAA East Regional.

White fouled on her second attempt and was given a pass on the third try.

She finished 20th overall, out of 24 competitors.

Wiggins finished a disappointing last in his event, the 100 meter dash. Wiggins ran unattached, racing to a 10.59 time. He ran a 10.23 at the NCAA East Regional finals, winning the event there.

He ran just a shade slower at the NCAA finals, clocking in at 10.24 to finish 12th.

Greg Sadler of Nike and Shomari Wilson, who ran unattached, finished just ahead of Wiggins.

Appalachian State University is considered one of the best values among public colleges and universities, according to Consumers Digest magazine.

Appalachian State ranked 30th in the country.

The list considered the quality of education offered, academic excellence of freshman enrollment, graduation rates, student-to-faculty ratio and percent of faculty holding a Ph.D. or highest degree. These factors were then weighed against out-of-state tuition.
