Appalachian State University men’s basketball will travel to four major schools during the 2004-2005 season, released as part of the schedule announced by head coach Houston Fancher.

The Mountaineers will travel to the University of Virginia at Charlottesville in the second game of the season, Nov. 24. In addition, they will head to the University of South Carolina at Columbia, Vanderbilt University and the University of Miami (Fla.).

While all four of the premium non-conference match-ups will be away from the Holmes Convocation Center, four of the first six contests of the season are at home.

The Mountaineers will host Erskine University in the season opener, as well as Tennessee Technological University, James Madison University and the University of South Carolina Upstate (previously USC-Spartanburg).

Appalachian State faced Tennessee Tech, James Madison, South Carolina and Vanderbilt in the 2003-2004 season. They managed to steal only victory out of the four, knocking off James Madison 58-55.

Milligan College and Longwood University will also travel to the Holmes Convocation Center for non-conference games.

Milligan, Erskine and USC-Upstate all play below the Division I level. Longwood is in it’s first season of playing almost entirely Division I opponents.

The Southern Conference slate of games begins Dec. 11, with the Mountaineers heading to Wofford University. ASU lost 99-92 last season to the Terriers.

Outside of the traditional home and away contests with other teams in the Northern Division of the Southern Conference, College of Charleston, the Citadel and Furman University will all head to Boone.

The Mountaineers will travel to Davidson College and Georgia Southern University.

“We are excited about the competitive schedule that we face next season,” Fancher said in a press release from the ASU Office of Sports Information. “Not only do we play two teams apiece from the ACC and SEC, but we get to continue some very competitive series from seasons past.”

The Mountaineers return nine letterwinners from last season’s squad that that went 9-21 overall and 4-12 in SoCon play.

Women’s basketball head coach Adrienne Shuler is putting together a schedule that proves to be the best you have to play the best.

University of Maryland will head to the Holmes Convocation Center for the season opener on Nov. 19. Maryland advanced to the second round of the 2004 NCAA Tournament.

They become the first ACC squad to visit Boone since Wake Forest in 2000.

Maryland returns it’s top two scorers and four players who started regularly during the 2003-2004 season.

Two days after Maryland, the Mountaineers will travel to Clemson University to face the 2004 Women’s National Invitational Tournament (NIT) participant Tigers.

ASU has never won against Clemson, although the last match-up was in 1996.

At the Florida State Thanksgiving Tournament Appalachian State can face possibly its third ACC opponent in a row.

The field and match-ups have yet to be determined.

Host Florida State advanced to the second round of the WNIT last season.

The non-conference slate of games wraps up with match-ups against Campbell University at home and Coastal Carolina University and High Point University on the road.

Each Southern Conference school will head to the Holmes Convocation Center, in addition to ASU facing each at their own arena.

One highlight of the conference schedule is the home and away with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

The Mocs finished the SoCon schedule last year 20-0 and made it the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

“Our schedule is the best that we have put together in our three years at Appalachian,” Shuler said in a press release from the ASU Office of Sports Information.

“It is a very challenging slate, but an exciting one considering all the top-notch programs which we will have the opportunity to face, not just on the road but right here in Boone.”

The Mountaineers return three starters and nine letterwinners from last season’s squad, which finished 7-21 overall and 6-14 in league play.
