| Rogers to play in 2004, his sixth
year |
by Hugh Kellenberger
Editor-In-Chief
Appalachian State University defensive back Nygel Rogers has been
granted a rare sixth year of eligibility by the National Collegiate
Athletic Association (NCAA), the NCAA and Appalachian State announced
last Tuesday.
Rogers is eligible to play with the Mountaineers this fall after
receiving a waiver to the five-year rule.
Severe knee injuries cost him all but one game of the 1999 season
at Kemper Military College and kept him out of the lineup for the
entire 2003 season.
Rogers will bring a valuable veteran presence to the Appalachian
secondary this season.
He was an All-Southern Conference performer in both 2001 and 2002,
totaling 159 tackles, 17 pass break-ups and five interceptions in
just two seasons.
Prior to his injury last fall, he was considered a preseason All-American
candidate.
“I am very glad that the NCAA has given me the opportunity
to compete on the collegiate level for one more season,” Rogers
said in a statement.
“It was hard to not be able to play last season, but I had
the opportunity to act as a coach to some of the younger players
and I’m excited for the opportunity to play on the same field
with them this year. I want to thank [ASU athletic trainer] Jim
Shorten, Ms. [Debbie] Richardson [ASU associate athletics director]
and Coach [Jerry] Moore for all they have done to make this possible.”
In his absence last season, two freshmen made an immediate impact.
Jeremy Wiggins led the team in tackles with 90.
Corey Lynch had a team-high six interceptions to go with his 57
tackles.
