Impact sought by Staff Council By Justin Boulmay
Staff Writer
The Appalachian State University Staff Council is working to have a greater influence on campus, while continuing activities from past years.
“Staff Council is a group of staff members who have been elected or volunteered to represent staff in their building,” Staff Council president Terri L. Miller said Thursday.
The Staff Council tries to have at least one representative per on-campus building, Miller said.
Miller is a finance coordinator for the Office of Extension and Distant Education (OEDE).
One goal of the Staff Council has been to have a greater voice in decisions affecting the university, and Miller said that she believes that goal is being accomplished in part by staff members serving on university committees.
Staff members participate on boards such as the Chancellor Search Committee, Cultural Affairs Advisory Board and the Library Services Committee.
A resolution passed by the Staff Council called for the relocation of certain departmental vehicles occupying on-campus parking spaces to “perimeter lots” such as the Broyhill Inn & Conference Center, according to the resolution.
Administration approved the resolution, freeing on-campus parking spaces.
“The Staff Council is also seeking greater cooperation with the Student Government Association and the Faculty Senate,” Tina R. Parlier, office manager for the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership said.
Parlier is the Staff Council president-elect and will take the post of president next year.
Parlier said Staff Council wants to continue the community service projects it has done in the past.
One of those services is the Christmas Shopping Spree. Through this program, 84 children in need are taken shopping. Last year, each child received $159.
Another tradition to be continued is the awarding of Staff Council scholarships, Miller said.
The two scholarships are the Staff Council Scholarship, awarded to dependants of staff members, and the Staff Council Endowment Scholarship, awarded to staff members themselves.
The Staff Council Cookbook, published in 2001, also helps to raise funds, Staff Council Treasurer and merchandise manager for the University Bookstore Lorraine P. Childers said.
Staff Council will host Tiny Doubles, a fundraiser Sept. 19 and 20 at Boone Mall.
