| Our Perspective ...MTVs visit to
disrupt another student event |
This
past May, close to a million dollars worth of damage was done when
a fire ignited in the Living-Learning Center. Tuition is up, parking
spaces are disappearing, and youll be lucky to find a seat
in your classroom, much less a place to live.
Wait, how could we possibly forget about the budget cuts?
Never mind all that drivel. MTV is coming to town!
Yes, thats right, the mighty Music Television- overseer of
pop culture and all that is extreme (but not enough
to raise any eyebrows)- is back at Appalachian State University
to film students for their two-hour Homecoming Weekend 2003,
extravaganza.

| Students should take drug test in applications |
Cant
go far without seeing Nickel and Dimed, and this commentary
isnt an Ehrenreich-free zone, either.
A professor of mine shocked the class on the first day by administering
a mock drug test. He didnt tell us about the mock
part until we were all crammed into the guys bathroom. The
ordeal got me thinking.
If key components of hiring, firing and retaining of employment
are drug tests, then why not include a urine specimen with college
applications? I dont think Im crazy, but feel free to
read on.

| Education hindered by construction projects |
Between
my Tuesday appointments, I followed my routine and walked to Cascades
Cafe in the Plemmons Student Union for lunch. Normally, I build
time into my schedule for long lines and heavy crowds in the Cascades
area, but today I found it unnecessary.
Cascades was surprisingly not busy. In fact, I noticed there were
hardly any people in the entire student union. The emptiness seemed
strange until I considered how inaccessible the student union has
become.
The multiple construction projects currently underway have blocked
all but three entrances to the student union.
