Our Perspective ...MTV’s visit to disrupt another student event
   This past May, close to a million dollars worth of damage was done when a fire ignited in the Living-Learning Center. Tuition is up, parking spaces are disappearing, and you’ll be lucky to find a seat in your classroom, much less a place to live.
    Wait, how could we possibly forget about the budget cuts?
    Never mind all that drivel. MTV is coming to town!
    Yes, that’s right, the mighty Music Television- overseer of pop culture and all that is “extreme” (but not enough to raise any eyebrows)- is back at Appalachian State University to film students for their two-hour “Homecoming Weekend 2003,” extravaganza.

Students should take drug test in applications
  Can’t go far without seeing “Nickel and Dimed,” and this commentary isn’t an Ehrenreich-free zone, either.
    A professor of mine shocked the class on the first day by administering a mock drug test. He didn’t tell us about the “mock” part until we were all crammed into the guys’ bathroom. The ordeal got me thinking.
    If key components of hiring, firing and retaining of employment are drug tests, then why not include a urine specimen with college applications? I don’t think I’m crazy, but feel free to read on.

Education hindered by construction projects
  Between my Tuesday appointments, I followed my routine and walked to Cascades Cafe in the Plemmons Student Union for lunch. Normally, I build time into my schedule for long lines and heavy crowds in the Cascades area, but today I found it unnecessary.
    Cascades was surprisingly not busy. In fact, I noticed there were hardly any people in the entire student union. The emptiness seemed strange until I considered how inaccessible the student union has become.
    The multiple construction projects currently underway have blocked all but three entrances to the student union.
