Scout team sticks around for chance to make ASU’s playing roster by Brad Norman

   Their day starts the same as someone who actually plays in the game, beginning with lifting and running at 5:30 a.m.
    After classes, athletes return to Owen Field House for meetings and reviews of the previous game.
    Practice starts at 4 p.m. and lasts two hours, but sometimes the players do not get a chance to leave until 7:30 p.m.

The Mountaineer women’s field hockey team is hard at practice, while working on running, drills and conditioning in the sun Tuesday.
Duke blanks ASU
   ASU suffered the first loss of the season to Duke University on Sunday. Duke, ranked fifth in the STX/NFHCA poll, pushed six goals past ASU goalie Kate Ryno.
    Ryno finished the game with 17 saves on Duke’s 31 shots on goal. ASU failed to record a shot on goal.
    “That was a tough loss for us against Duke. [The team] came out of that not crushed, not disheartened. They are a resilient team,” head coach Mandy Latz said.
    Duke improves to 4-0 on the season. ASU falls to 3-1.

ASU finishes second in tournament by Hugh Kellenberger

    Appalachian State University finished second in the George Mason/Comfort Inn Soccer Classic held last weekend at George Mason Stadium.
    ASU tied George Mason University 1-1 in the opening round. ASU’s goal in the contest was ruled an “own goal” by the Patriots. Fredrick Henriksen sent a shot into the penalty area that was deflected by a sliding George Mason player into the net.
