-Album Reviews-
|
by Kevin DeLury
Senior Staff Writer |
This week, the world lost one of
the greatest musicians ever. I have no words to describe how much
Johnny Cashs music has meant to me and countless others, so
I will simply dedicate my little portion of The Appalachian to the
Man in Black. May he rest in peace.
On to the music reviews, once again provided by
the fine folks at WASU.

| ASUs steel drum ensemble to perform Friday |
by Stephanie Marshall
Staff Writer |
Instead of using the conventional
instruments made of metal, the Steely Pan Steel Band started playing
with 55-gallon orange juice barrels.
The Steely Pan Steel Band, Appalachian State
Universitys own steel drum band, may have had small beginnings,
but they have moved up in the world. The band will perform this
Friday at 8 p.m. with the father of modern steel band instruments,
Elliot Ellie Mannette.
Mannette crafted the first steel pans from a
55-gallon container, revolutionized the tuning process by reversing
the method of sinking (recreating the bottom of the gallon container
from convex to concave) and creating six of the nine instruments
of the steel family, according to biographical information.
