RIAA targets Internet piracy at Appalachian by Leslie Rasimas

   On-campus violations of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act reached 1,000 last year, Dr. Douglas B. May, director of Academic Computing Services, said. Now, the recording industry actively pursues people in violation of the DMCA.
   The record companies file lawsuits, issue subpoenas and fine Internet users that violate the DMCA by sharing or downloading copyrighted materials.

Robbins: support building to be expanded by David Forbes

Students make their way past construction fences between the new Chiller Plant and the Annas Student Support Building. The construction includes expansion and renovation of the building, which houses the Counseling Center, Student Health Services and the Post Office.
      Two construction projects in progress around the Annas Student Support Building will expand the Post Office and Counseling Center and add a temporary sidewalk, Clyde D. Robbins, Director of Design and Construction, said Friday.
Robbins said the sidewalk is scheduled to be finished by the end of the week.

SGA elections leave 28 seats undetermined by Justin Boulmay

   Nominees running for Student Government Association student senate saw the results of their campaigning Thursday afternoon, when online voting came to an end.
   Eighty students ran for the senate, a decrease from 96 participants in last year’s election.
   Last week, 1,481 students voted via AppalNET for their choice of nominees, either from their respective residence halls or a selected number who live off-campus.
   On campus, 1,096 students voted, while 385 off-campus students participated, SGA Chief of Staff Heather A. Robertson said.

SGA needs overhaul
   I like to vote, really.
   I was raised by one of those families that voted in every election, no matter how insignificant the office. More often than not, my sister and I were dragged into the voting booth as well, so my mother could point to each of the tickets, telling us what they were and why she was voting the way she was. I’ve voted in every election since 2000 and am proud of that fact.
   So, when Student Government Association elections came up this year, I went to do my duty. I figured it couldn’t be hard. I spent all last year covering SGA for The Appalachian, and I thought I had a good grasp on things.

Workers began excavating the area between the Annas Student Support Building and Plemmons Student Union in August. Director of Design and Construction Dr. Clyde D. Robbins said a temporary sidewalk should be completed by the end of the week, but noise and inconvenience will be commonplace.
