Students make their way past construction fences between the new Chiller Plant and the Annas Student Support Building. The construction includes expansion and renovation of the building, which houses the Counseling Center, Student Health Services and the Post Office.
Two construction projects in progress around the Annas Student Support Building will expand the Post Office and Counseling Center and add a temporary sidewalk, Clyde D. Robbins, Director of Design and Construction, said Friday.
Robbins said the sidewalk is scheduled to be finished by the end of the week.
“There was a lot more concrete down there than anybody ever envisioned, and we had to add a drainage system, Robbins said.
“That isn’t that unusual. When you open the ground you never know what you’re going to find.”
The Counseling Center will undergo an expansion in the direction of the student union and bookstore, Dan Jones, director of the counseling center, said.
“In addition to adding three offices, we’re renovating the greeting area and expanding some existing offices,” Jones said Friday. “We already have part time graduate students and professors here sometimes, and some of the office space will go to them.”
The Annas building, which houses the Post Office, Counseling Center and the Student Health Services, is scheduled for a renovation and expansion to be finished by the end of the year, W. Kelley Ingram, facilities architect, said.
“We’re pushing out part of the building, which will contain 1,500 new post office boxes, and we’re expanding out on the counseling center side so we can add three more offices,” Robbins said.
Robbins said that the money for this project was a carryover from the funds used to originally build the Annas building.
“The contractors will provide barricades to internally separate their work areas from the public areas, all of the current student post office boxes will remain open,” Ingram said.
“We’ll also set up a temporary service counter.”
Ingram said that all student service areas would remain open and accessible during construction.
“For a while, direct access to the post office will be off of Howard Street,” Robbins said.
Internal barricades similar to those in the post office will be set up around the receptionist’s area of the Counseling Center.
“I expect it will probably be noisy and messy in here for a while. We’re getting new carpet too. We’ll just have to move around offices while some of them are being renovated,” Jones said.
“But we’re grateful to get it. In the long run I think it will be more helpful, even if there are some difficulties in the short run.”
