McPherson (19) scored one of the two goals during the game on Tuesday. Mountaineers play the undefeated Gamecocks Saturday.
Before a crowd of 557, Mountaineer Fredrik Henriksen and Keon McPherson delivered second-half goals within five minutes of each other.
At the 35:21 mark, Henriksen squirted a penalty kick through the UNC-Asheville blocking brigade and past the goalie into the corner of the net for the first goal of the game. Henriksen now has three goals on the season, out of five total Mountaineer goals.
McPherson sealed the victory with 31:15 left, delivering a side shot off an assist from Carter Parrish. McPherson’s first goal of the season, it was Parrish’s second assist.

Even though Appalachian State’s football team is 0-2, with only one more game before conference play starts, head coach Jerry Moore said the game on Saturday against Morehead State University is not a must-win game.
“I think there is a sense of urgency among the players and coaches, but the must-win games start next week,” Moore said. “This is not a do or die game.”
Morehead State is currently 1-1, having lost to University of Dayton in their opening game and then defeating Coastal Carolina University last week. This game marks the first time that the two schools meet.

The Appalachian State University men and women’s cycling team aims to win another Atlantic Coast Cycling Conference championship.
“We’re looking forward to hopefully taking the conference championship as well as taking several guys to nationals,” said senior Benjamin Early, who returns to his fourth season.
Appalachian took home the ACCC Road Championship in both 2001 and 2002, and they look to repeat as champions this year.
“I think the team will be strong,” Early said. “We have strong riders like Taylor Jones, Hatcher Rosebrock and Alisha Little, as well as many others who can contribute to the team.”
The Mountaineers have become accustomed to having strong riders.
