Our Perspective ... SGA must work to overcome dead weight
   It’s a new year for the student senate.
There are new issues to tackle, new positions to take and new senators to get the job done.
The only question is will the senate be more effective this year?
    After a year marked by relatively meaningless legislation, bitter infighting and a clear lack of student interest, it seems the senate’s only option is to step up and act like the legislative body it is.
    But things look bleak if the elections are any indication of things to come. Students simply failed to show support in electing the senators. A mere 11 percent of the student body voted in the elections, leaving over 20 vacant seats.

Forced volunteerism defeats service purpose
   Recently, it was suggested to me that I should visit a third-world country. The general idea was that in order to expand my narrow view of life, I might benefit from serving others from a poverty-stricken society.
    After thinking about the arguments presented to me, I have come to one conclusion.
    Quite frankly, I have no interest in doing so.
    Now before the “ignorant, self-absorbed American pig” sentiment comes out, as it undoubtedly will, hear me out.
    While attending Bishop McGuiness Memorial High School in Winston-Salem, it was required that in order for students to graduate, we must perform a certain number of community service hours for a cause of our choosing. If you were not able to find a worthy cause to contribute your time to, one was assigned for you.

RIAA confused: consumer is hand that feeds
   The buffer generation between our parents and us proclaimed that they wanted their MTV, and they wanted it now. Our generation, we want our Kazaa.
   Kazaa, for those of you not in “the know,” is a massive peer-to-peer file-sharing program. Essentially, anything and everything can be found on this network.
   As I write this, approximately 5.7 million GB of music, videos, etc. are available at the touch of a button.
   That free information is exactly what the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is worried about.
