Sean Jackson (24) carried the ball while Torez Leach (26) blocks a Citadel player during the game Saturday. Travis Zobel won the game for the Bulldogs with the game winning 26-yard field goal. ASU moves to a 1-3 season.
Appalachian’s senior kicker Erik Rockhold was the hero last week against Morehead State University.
This time it was Travis Zobel’s turn.
The Citadel senior kicker/punter executed a fake punt that led to a touchdown and later kicked the winning 26-yard field goal, enabling The Citadel to escape with a 24-21 victory against Appalachian Saturday.
Zobel is usually reserved for kickoffs and punts, leaving the field goal duties to redshirt-freshman Blake Vandiver.
Vandiver had already missed an extra point earlier in the game so The Citadel’s head coach Ellis Johnson called on Zobel to kick the game winner.

With the 4-0 win over Catawba College the Mountaineers improve their record to 6-2, and now lead in conference for goals scored with 21.
A diverse scoring approach was the key to Appalachian State University field hockey’s 4-0 win over visiting Catawba College on Sunday. Four different players scored goals, two others earned assists.
The scoring started just seven minutes in when junior Lizzie Watson put a shot past Catawba goalkeeper Lauren Weitzel. Senior Bridgette Burkhardt was credited with the assist.
A penalty corner opportunity came just 54 seconds later, resulting in the second Appalachian goal. Kim Helscel and Burkhardt set up Nara Brookes for her seventh goal of the season, leading the team.
