Every year, the Alumni
Association sponsors an awards banquet for distinguished alumni.
This years awards banquet was held on Oct. 3, at the Broyhill Inn
and Conference Center, honoring three alumni, and one non-alumnus
Tracey Ford, associate alumni director said.
The purpose of the banquet is to honor certain alumni with the Outstanding
Service Award, the Distinguished Alumnus Award, and an Honorary
Alumnus Award, Ford said.
The Outstanding Service Award is given to alumni or friends
of the university who served in many ways over the years,
Ford said.
Two alumni, Vaughn Hayes and Charlie Murray, received the Outstanding
Service Award.
Hayes, vice president of store planning for Lowes Companies Inc.,
has been a member of many clubs and councils including the Yosef
Club and the Appalachian Alumni Council.
Hayes has also been actively involved in the Office of Admissions
Mountaineer Volunteer Program, helping to recruit students to Appalachian
and has contributed to the Centennial History Faculty Emeriti Endowment
and the Lowes Distinguished Professorship in Computer Science.
Hayes was involved in The Campaign for the Second Century, the most
successful fundraising effort in the universitys history.
Its quite an honor, Hayes said. I accept
it with a great deal of pride, and a great deal of gratitude.
Murray is vice president of Murray Supply Company in Winston-Salem.
He is a member of several clubs and boards including the Yosef Club,and
the Loyalty Fund Advisory Board.
Murray is currently serving his second three-year term on the Walker
College of Business Advisory Council and has participated in the
Annual Walker College of Business Alumni Day for four years.
Additionally, he and his wife Beth Murray founded the Charles V.
and Beth W. Murray Scholarship for business, which is awarded annually
to a freshman intending to major in that field.
Alan C. Brantley, a criminal investigative analyst with the Federal
Bureau of Investigation, received the Distinguished Alumnus Award.
Brantley is a supervisory special agent with the FBIs National
Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime in Quantico, Virginia.
He conducts detailed and careful reviews of case materials from
forensic, investigative, and behavioral perspectives, which provide
valuable information about crimes and criminals.
Brantley has worked on high profile cases including a temporary
assignment at the Pentagon following the 9-11 terrorist attacks.
Bud Baker, a retired CEO for Wachovia Bank, received the Honorary
Alumnus Award. He has worked on many projects with the Walker College
of Business.
Baker participated in the Fudan Banking Conference in China, a cooperative
effort with American and Chinese banks that the College of Business
takes part in.
He has also shared his leadership and business
skills with business students, and has endowed a Partners in Excellence
Professorship to the university.
