Black promises to deliver new ‘big play’ at fifth-ranked Furman University by Brad Norman
Staff Writer
Almost one year ago, Derrick Black took a Josh Jeffries lateral into the end zone and gave Appalachian State University an improbable win over Furman University.
The two teams renew their rivalry this Saturday in Greenville, S.C., and although Jeffries is long gone, Black said he is prepared to top himself this year.
“[The return] was a big play, but that was last year,” Black said. “This year I am just going to have to come with something else new and make another big play. I’ll get something done, it’s going to happen.”
Black and the rest of the Appalachian defense will face their biggest test of the season, excluding University of Hawaii.

Expectations continue to rise for the Appalachian State University Women’s Field Hockey team, even after two straight losses.

This past weekend the Mountaineers sent six fencers to compete in a tournament in Wilmington.
“We did really well and we’re happy with our placing and the fact that we won all three events,” junior Brendan McConville, said.
The Mountaineers, who competed against fencers from North Carolina State University, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, swept all three events that were held: both the Saber event and the two Epee events.
