| Our Perspective ... Campus governments:
effective or ignored? |
We've
heard it before.
Campus governments--student, faculty or staff--rally
behind a resolution, only to have it shot down by administration.
Resolutions either aren't researched adequately,
or fall short in support from constituents. What about the well-researched,
well-supported resolutions?
At Monday's Faculty Senate meeting, members voted on a resolution
to open the search for a new chancellor.
The Appalachian's only source for information
is a paper trail leading to search committee chair Robert Fox.
Despite Open Meeting Law limitations regarding
job applicants and contract negotiations, the campus community needs
a larger role in the decision-making process of the Chancellor Search
Committee.

| Can the movie sequel live up to the original? |
Neo
Vs. Frodo: Who’s Going to Win?
I love movies, and on Nov. 4 and Dec. 17, you
can guess where I’ll be.
I don’t think I know a single person who
isn’t looking forward to either “The Matrix: Revolutions”
or “Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.”
In my case, I want both, and if I have to camp
in front of a theater to get tickets, well, doggone it, that’s
just what I’ll have to do.
Actually, I probably won’t, but you get
the idea. I can’t wait.
Both are the third and final installments of
their series, and both are opening a little more than a month apart.

| Clearing up misconceptions about newspaper |
Sunday
through Wednesday the office is churning with activity. Deadlines
come and go, and when it comes down to the wire there are 7,000
copies distributed across Boone and the state.
It still impresses me.
What impresses me more is the staff that puts
it together.
With 38 staff members, The Appalachian manages
to produce a newspaper twice a week. Unlike many “real world”
experiences, our staff must manage class work, homework and possibly
other jobs. Unlike many “real world” experiences, our
staff members are not paid for their work per se, but rather they
receive scholarship-like stipends.
