| Faculty Senate: more power wanted in campus

The Faculty Senate voted Monday to open
the closed doors of the Chancellor Search Committee, calling
for forums and interviews with each candidate considered
for the position.
The Senate unanimously approved the resolution,
which calls for meetings between the candidates and the constituent
groups represented on the committee, such as Faculty Senate,
Staff Council and the Student Government Association.

Affairs to work with faculty members about their concerns
with construction on campus.
Senators expressed their disappointment
with Business Affairs’ previous behavior in the discussion

| Police advise safety in parking areas |

According to
the Appalachian State University Parking and Traffic Web
site, the university has nearly 5, 700 parking spaces. Many
students park in Greenwood and South Lot and it is important
that they stay safe while they are parking their cars.
“Students should always try and go to
the parking lots with a friend, especially late at night,”
University Police Sgt. Jason Cornett said.
Cornett said students should utilize the AppalCART and 262-
RIDE.

| Dept. of English houses, employs guest
authors |

The department
of English introduced the Rachel Rivers-Coffey Professorship
in Creative Writing this semester.
Dr. David P. Haney, chairperson of the
department of English, said, “[The professorship] is
to enhance our undergraduate creative writing program. It
will give our students exposure to different writers.”
Once each year, the chosen author will
take residency at the university for a six-week period, Haney
said.

| Gospel Choir hits high note with more than
100 student singers |

The Appalachian
State University Gospel Choir meets Tuesday and Thursday
nights to sing, pray and move to the beat of their accompanying
gospel band.
“I love gospel music, and they made
it sound like so much fun ... you can see the spirit in everybody,
it’s just an awesome sight,” member Lindsay Gresh
said.
The choir is led by Dr. Roosevelt Escalante
and now boasts of more than 100 members. Jessica Corpening,
a junior accounting major, is one of those members and has
been with the group for three years.

| Salsa hip-hop dance kicks off weekend for
multicultural prospects |

A “salsa
hip-hop” dance is coming to Whitewater in Plemmons
Student Union Friday as a kickoff event for Appalachian State
University’s annual Multicultural Prospective Student
Weekend.
“The dance will give students the
opportunity to learn dance moves from the Latin culture.”
Tracey L. Wright, assistant director for the Center for Student
Involvement and Leadership, said. “Many of our Latino
students will be on hand to teach the different moves for
those desiring to learn,”
