Don't paint obscene remarks in tunnel
To the Editor:
I am writing this letter as a response to the rather obscene graffiti painted in our tunnels lately.
In particular, I am writing in response to the remarks painted about Jesus Christ by the Pagan Student Association.
I want to congratulate them, as I am sure their obscene remarks were painted to enrage other students to think.
I am one of those students that has thought about the remarks they painted (remarks so disgusting and in violation of our tunnel painting policy that they had to be painted over in the days that followed), so I assume they have accomplished what they set out to do. However, I would also like to congratulate them on what I can only hope they didn’t mean to do.
For one, congratulations for working against the efforts of so many to bring diversity to this campus.
For years this campus has worked to decrease diversity. Diversity doesn’t include only people of different races. It includes people with varying belief systems as well. Your remarks painted in the tunnel that night helped to thwart those efforts as well as any racial slur.
Your organization can henceforth be thought of with the same respect that we afford the Ku Klux Klan. Congratulations.
Secondly, congratulations for correcting my thinking. For the duration of my time here, I have thought Appalachian was a wonderful place to exchange ideas, learn about myself, and to grow. After reading your remarks I realized that this place is no different from any other place in this world. It is and always will be a place full of ignorance.
I hope you enjoy your time here at Appalachian. I can only hope that others will provide you with the same open-mindedness and tolerance you have already shown them.
