A “salsa
hip-hop” dance is coming to Whitewater in Plemmons
Student Union Friday as a kickoff event for Appalachian State
University’s annual Multicultural Prospective Student
Weekend.
“The dance will give students the opportunity to learn
dance moves from the Latin culture.” Tracey L. Wright,
assistant director for the Center for Student Involvement
and Leadership, said. “Many of our Latino students
will be on hand to teach the different moves for those desiring
to learn,”
Wright said she hopes students will attend so they can help
share their experiences at Appalachian with the visiting
students.
The dance is called “La Bamba,” which means “The
Bomb,” Hispanic Student Association president Laura
Limon said.
Limon said HSA co-sponsors the dance with the Cultural Awareness
Council. HSA members at the dance teach salsa dance.
Kelly Dalton, a sophomore business education major, attended
the dance last year and learned some salsa dance moves.
“I had fun and I would go again, everybody will dance
with you,” Dalton said. “I didn’t know
technical salsa dance steps before, now I do.”
“HSA wants to provide opportunities for Hispanics,
Latinos and others to do things that are culturally Latin,”
Limon said.
“HSA meets every Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the Mount Laurel
Room of student union and talks about upcoming events. Mostly
we just hang out, get to know each other,” Limon said.
“Occasionally we’ll have a potluck dinner on
Sunday evenings for people to come and try different Latino
foods.”
An upcoming HSA event is the Latino festival HSA plans for
next semester, with another salsa dance. The festival will
highlight Latino culture and food and is open to everyone.
HSA is also involved in raising money for the Multicultural
Scholarship that other multicultural clubs are involved in.
The scholarship will be available to minority freshmen that
come to Appalachian.
Limon said that she is excited about what HSA is doing and
hopes that people will come out to have fun and learn.
“La Bamba” will be held in Whitewater Oct. 17
at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $2 in advance, $3 at the door, and
can be purchased at the contact table in the student union
next week. |
