Women's Center presents first juried art competition by Samantha Sierra

Appalachian State University’s Women’s Center hosts their first juried women’s art contest, “From Appalachia With Love,” to celebrate and recognize women artists on campus.

Crystal L. Genes, contest coordinator of this year’s program, invites women on campus and in the community to participate in “From Appalachia With Love.”

“It’s implying the women in the community make everything with love,” Genes said.

Genes said mediums include 2-D and 3-D art. Art that is 2-D must be framed or matted and ready to hang. Genes said cash prizes would be awarded, depending on the number of contestants, and that the entry fee will cover a portion of the cash prizes, but donations are welcome.
All submitted art must be original and for sale by female artists. Genes said there is no limit on experience or subject matter. She said one-third of the proceeds go to the Women’s Center.

Genes said there have been no art submissions so far and she said she hopes it isn’t due to controversy about the flyer that reads: “Got Art? Got Boobs? Get Recognized!”

Genes said she had not expected people to be offended. She said she intended it to be eye-catching and light-hearted and hopes no one was insulted.

Sara R. Smith, who is aiding Genes in contest coordination, said there have already been donations from the community.

Smith said the donations show that people are willing to help.

“There are a lot of nice people in Boone that are donating. That’s encouraging,” Smith said.

Serah E. Chavda of the Women’s Center said she is excited about the upcoming event.

“I hope this becomes an annual thing that we do. We are moving into a new venue of women, I hope we do it and it gets a good reception,” Chavda said.

The deadline to submit entries is Oct. 31 at 2 p.m. Contest winners will be called Nov. 3 and 4. Opening night of the show and benefit refreshments are Nov. 5. Admission to the show is $15 for the public, $6 for students and free for artists and their guests.

The time and place of the art show is to be announced. The exhibit will run Nov. 6-21.
