Conference sack leader Stovall plans to sack Elon Phoenix's rise from ashes

The Appalachian State University football team did something this week at practice they didn’t do during their 1-3 start or during their three-game stretch against nationally ranked opponents.

They had fun.

“Practice wasn’t too much fun early in the season when we were 1-3, but after we got our feet under us the players started to enjoy practice,” head coach Jerry Moore said.

The fun had at practice last week translated into a 47-7 smashing of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and the Mountaineers hope fun this week will result in another big win Saturday against Elon College (2-8, 1-5).

Appalachian State University field hockey begins the NorPac Conference Tournament today in St. Louis. ASU comes into the tournament as a high seed, but making the championship game will not be easy.

ASU’s bracket features the University of California at Berkeley, a top team in the nation and the number one team in the NorPac conference.

Seeded as the second team from the East Division, the Mountaineers' first opponent will be the Stanford University Cardinals. The Cardinals have struggled this year, finishing with a 4-12-0 record, 2-4-0 in the conference.

The Appalachian State University men’s and women’s cross country teams delivered strong performances, both as a team and individually, at the Southern Conference meet last weekend at Davidson College.

The men’s team finished second in the conference, just seven points behind the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
“We graduated four of five top runners from last season and still finished within seven points of a good Chattanooga team,” ASU head coach Mike Curcio said.

ASU’s Brandon Helms won the Freshman of the Year award, finishing less than two seconds ahead of teammate and fellow freshman Mark Maddox.

Mountaineers played Wofford earlier in the season and came out victorious 1-0.
Southern Conference Tournament action starts today with the annual women’s soccer tournament. Appalachian State University, seeded sixth in the tournament, will face off against the third-seeded College of Charleston today at 5 p.m.
ASU played the spoiler last Sunday, defeating East Tennessee State University. That loss sent ETSU from third to fifth in the conference, but also meant it would be the championship game before ASU gets another shot at the Bucs.

College of Charleston carries an 11-6-2 record into the tournament, including a 2-1 defeat of the Mountaineers in Boone. Kristin Rhyne is the top scorer for the Cougars, totaling up eight goals and five assists during the regular season. Alice Keeney is a force in the goal, with a 1.07 goals against average and five shutouts. ASU senior midfielder Renee Stetkevich is confident about the team going into SoCon tournament action.
