Our Perspective ... Tuition, fee increases to be determined now

In an era of University of North Carolina system-wide budget cuts and tuition hikes, it is more important than ever for the students, faculty and staff at Appalachian State University to take a stand and keep education affordable.

The General Assembly cut the UNC system budget around 4 percent last summer, tallying the cuts to nearly $350 million in cuts over the last four years.

This time fall break could not come soon enough. The semester is flying by, as it always does, and the thought of getting “normal sleep” and home cooked food was I am sure on everyone’s minds. Well, at least for those who went home over the break.

However, by senior year, things have started to change a little bit when you go home.

When you go home freshman year, it really seems that not that much has changed.

Your career should be something you enjoy
Careers are one of the most important decisions we will all make in our lives. Students spend the majority their lives going to school preparing for professional careers.

It’s why we are all here at Appalachian State University in the first place.

Yet, lately I have noticed a problem.

Students are choosing careers not based on what they want to do, but rather on what outside influences are telling them they should do.

Political parties influencing private companies
Republicans everywhere are rejoicing. Howard Dean has stuck his foot in his mouth again, the partial-birth abortion bill has been signed into law and CBS will not show their miniseries "The Reagans."

"The Reagans," for those of you who do not know, was the feather in CBS’s cap. Their big sweeps month stunt, a four hour movie about the life of former President Ronald Reagan and his wife Nancy. However, conservative groups got a hold of a script and have gone to town ever since.
